The Democrats are so concerned with race that they try to champion themselves as non-racist by talking about race all of the time. In fact, when Clinton was in office he was touted as being the first black president; this was probably done just in case the Republicans actually got Alan Keyes elected. Dems wanted to beat Repubs to the punch for credit.
